The framework
The Gravity & Grace COMPASS
A practical framework for noticing what is out of balance in your life — and choosing what kind of response is needed next. Not a personality type, not a belief system. A way to read your current situation and act on it.
Start here
What is its purpose?
To help you understand why you feel stuck, scattered, burned out, numb, overly controlling, or unable to follow through — and to identify what would bring things back into balance.
How do you use it?
Pause. Locate your current pattern on the COMPASS. Notice what you are overusing and what is missing. Then choose one practical adjustment.
When do you use it?
During decisions and transitions, in conflict, when creative work stalls, when you are running on empty, when the same pattern keeps repeating, or any time the next step is unclear.
The COMPASS
The COMPASS is built from two simple axes. Where you sit between them shapes how you respond to almost everything.
- Chaos ↔ Order — openness, flexibility, and possibility on one side; structure, boundaries, and follow-through on the other.
- Spirit ↔ Matter — meaning, values, and direction on one side; body, needs, resources, and practical reality on the other.
None of these four areas is better than another, and you need all of them. Trouble shows up when one takes over and the others go quiet — that is when you feel burned out, scattered, numb, or stuck. The COMPASS helps you see which one you are leaning on and which one you have been skipping.
Spirit + Chaos
Ideas, curiosity, and possibility. This is where new directions show up before they make logical sense. At its best: imaginative, open, willing to explore. Overused: lots of starts and no finishes, big plans that never land, hard to commit.
Spirit + Order
Values, standards, and direction. This is where you decide what matters and hold yourself to it. At its best: clear priorities, steady integrity, easy to trust. Overused: rigid rules, harsh self-judgment, perfectionism that stalls progress.
Matter + Chaos
Body, feelings, rest, and play. This is where you notice what you actually need in the moment. At its best: honest about emotion, well-rested, responsive. Overused: reacting on impulse, avoiding hard tasks, chasing whatever feels good right now.
Matter + Order
Systems, routines, and follow-through. This is where plans turn into finished work. At its best: reliable, organized, able to finish. Overused: constant productivity, controlling details, ignoring how you feel until you burn out.
Still the COMPASS
Putting the COMPASS Into Practice
This is not a second framework — it is how you actually use the one above. Three steps, in order, every time.
1. Notice the pattern
Name what is actually happening — without judgment. "I have started four things and finished none." "I have not stopped moving in three weeks." Naming it accurately is most of the work.
2. Choose the counterbalance
Look at the COMPASS and ask what is being overused and what is missing. Too much structure usually needs openness. Too much possibility usually needs a boundary or a deadline.
3. Take one grounded step
Make one small, concrete change — a different thought you practice, a boundary you set, a routine you adjust, or support you ask for. One step you can actually do this week beats a plan you never start.
Learning the pieces
- Two axes. Chaos ↔ Order is how open or structured you are being. Spirit ↔ Matter is whether you are working from meaning and direction or from your body and practical reality.
- Four areas. Each pair of axes makes one recognizable pattern of behavior — the four described above.
- One adjustment. You do not rebuild your life. You add back the one thing you have been leaving out.
